Local Business Expert Says Retailers Need to Prepare for Holiday Rush

A local business experts says retailers are likely to be busier than they think this year.

Many local shop owners are wringing their hands this year as the general knowledge is that most people will do most of their Christmas shopping online, but one local business expert says they shouldn’t count themselves out of the picture just yet.

“Some recent studies are showing that not everyone is going to spend all of their holiday cash online,” says a spokesman from FindUsLocal.com, a local business directory that uses GEO technology to automatically match a visitor’s location with a customized home page that shows them only the results from their local area. “In fact, some of the findings are surprising.”

He says that the youngest generation, Generation Z, will spend about 35 percent of their Christmas cash in brick and mortar stores, while Generation X will spend 48 percent of their money in local shops. Baby Boomers will also spend 48 percent locally, while seniors will spend 33 percent of their cash in their local community.

Another recent survey shows that 71 percent of Millennials visit multiple local shops to find the best deal they can, and 76 percent of them first look online before buying, but then 66 percent of them end up buying from a local business.

“What all of this means,” says the spokesman, “Is that if your local business isn’t yet listed in a local business directory, you’re probably missing out on a lot of business, especially this time of year. The surveys indicate that of those people who look online to conduct research about a product, a good percent of them will end up making the purchase from a local store.”

Creating a local business listing is free, and most local business experts recommend that every local business owner have at least one.

BREBES, Indonesia — Heavy rains hampered the search Friday for victims of a landslide on the Indonesian island of Java as authorities raised the death toll to seven. The chief of the disaster mitigation agency in Brebes, Eko Andalas, said a body was found Friday and one of the people injured in the disaster had died in a hospital. He said the number of missing is 14, down from 18, due to a duplicated name and two people incorrectly reported as victims. Florida school shooting: 'abject breakdown at all levels'

Feb 23, 2018

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — The Florida high school where a former student shot and killed 17 people with an assault-type rifle is reopening for teachers Friday as the community grappled with word that the armed officer on campus did nothing to stop the shooter. That failure, plus reports of a delay in security camera footage scanned by responding police and several records indicating the 19-year-old suspect displayed behavioral troubles for years added to what the Florida House speaker described as an "abject breakdown at all levels." The Valentine's Day shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School has reignited national debate...

AP sources: Adelson offers to help pay for Jerusalem embassy

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration is considering an offer from Republican mega-donor Sheldon Adelson to pay for at least part of a new U.S. embassy in Jerusalem, four U.S. officials told The Associated Press. Lawyers at the State Department are looking into the legality of accepting private donations to cover some or all of the embassy costs, the administration officials said. The discussions are occurring as the new embassy clears its final bureaucratic hurdles. On Thursday, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson ended weeks of delay by signing off on a security plan for moving the embassy from Tel Aviv to...

Trump bucks NRA, backs raising age for buying assault rifles

Feb 23, 2018

WASHINGTON — The nation should keep assault rifles out of the hands of anyone under 21, President Donald Trump says, defying his loyal supporters in the National Rifle Association amid America's public reckoning over gun violence. He also pushed hard for arming security guards and many teachers in U.S. schools. "There's nothing more important than protecting our children," Trump said, adding that he'd spoken with many members of Congress and NRA officials and insisting they would go along with his plans in the wake of last week's school shooting in Parkland, Florida, that left 17 people dead. But there were...
